  1. A journey to the Islands of Scotland
    A book by Samuel Johnson of his travels in 1773 from Edinburgh to the Highlands and then over to the Western Isles and down to Glasgow. This was at the time of the Highland clearances and is an excellent read.
  2. General History of the Highlands
    This account comes from a six volume set "History of the Scottish Highlands, Highland Clans and Highland Regiments" published in 1887. You should also see our section on Scottish Regiments which is part of this set.
  3. The Story of Leith
    A book by John Russell c1922 about the town of Leith near Edinburgh.
  4. A Summer in Skye
    A great book done in the 1800's in which you'll read about the place and the people and all about Second Site and Fairy Bridges and much else besides.
  5. Rothiemurchus
    Of all the districts overshadowed by the extensive Cairngorm range the most magnificent, by universal consent, is Rothiemurchus. It is a region entirely unique. There is nothing like it elsewhere.

Detailed Accounts, Smaller Books and Partial Books
These are usually small books of up to 40 pages or so. Sometimes we find a book where the whole is not of interest but there is perhaps one chapter that provides interesting information and so we extract that single chapter.
