Respected Sir,

As one of the most liberal, enlightened, and influential among the merchants of my native city,—as an employer of labour, kindly, considerate, and courteous,— and as a Member of the Imperial Legislature, possessing the confidence and esteem of a large section of my fellow-citizens, I have much pleasure in associating your name with the present volume. Permit me, therefore, to inscribe it to you, with every sentiment of respect and gratitude. The composition of the various Sketches contained in the volume has been to me a labour of love; the excursions on which they were founded, a succession of recreative and intellectual enjoyments. Let me hope that the perusal of my unpretending pages may, at least, afford to you some reflex of the pleasure they have afforded to myself, and that they may l occasionally recall to your memory the glorious features of •Jk that beautiful Frith, of which we are all so proud, and which £ offers so many sanitary and soul-elevating privileges to the ^ inhabitants of this great city.
