Culloden Field
by Patricia M. Williams

Amidst acrid smoke and bloody mire
Near the edge of the battle field
They came to lay their Highland laird
Where his body its soul would yield

Beneath an ancient Rowan tree
White pedals lace the ground
Spring times promise, a fading dream
While battle raged all around

They had come to fight for freedom
To save their Highland home
And restore the rightful man
To Scotland’s cherished throne

His life’s blood seeped into soil
Nourishing this aging tree
It’s branches giving comfort
As he passed into serenity

Now spring comes back to the Highlands
The Rowan trees bloom once again
And Scotland remembers the promise
Of her braw and bonnie men
