ALEXANDER MACDONALD MUNRO, the first editor of 'Scottish Notes And
Queries' in Aberdeen in 1887, was born on the 13th of August, 1861 in Old
Machar, Aberdeen to Adam Munro (Merchant Seaman - Ship Master) and
Christina Niven, who married in St Nicholas, Aberdeen on the 29th of
November, 1860. Alexander had two brothers, John Niven Munro and Adam
Munro, and a sister Helen Munro.
In the 1871 Census the children
were living with their mother at 54 College Street, Old Machar, but their
father Adam was then at sea . Tragically on January the 10th, 1872 Adam
died aged 31 years, after, as his death notice states, being very ill with
rheumatism and heart disease from July, 1871. Further grief afflicted the
young family on the 19th of December, 1874 when their mother Christina
died of bronchitis.
We then find in the 1881 Census that Alexander
is living with his Aunt Jane Mearns at 35 Broomhill Place, Old Machar, and
is employed as a Clerk in the City Chamberlain's Office, but in 1884 he
marries Catherine H. Stewart in Old Machar.
By the 1891 Census at
24 Broomhill Place, Alexander and Catherine have three children, Catherine
5, Alexander 4 and Julia 2 months, and Alexander is now an Accountant in
the City Chamberlain's Office.
The 1901 Census, with both Alexander
and Catherine at 26 Desswood Place, Rubislaw, suggests that Julia may have
died young as the children listed are Catherine 15, Alex 14 and Christina
7. Alexander is then still an Accountant in the City Chamberlain's Office.
But apart from this he has also been writing and editing books about local
and national Scottish history for the Spalding Club and other agencies.
Sadly, at this time, his wife Catherine has been suffering for two years
from Chronic Nephritis, and on the 4th of May that same year, she succumbs
to her illness.
On the 9th of September, 1903, Alexander as a widower, marries a Mary
Stewart. The marriage record shows that Alexander is by then the Assistant
City Chamberlain.
ALEXANDER MACDONALD MUNRO, now Aberdeen City
Chamberlain, dies eight years later from Cancer on the 26th of January,
1911, aged a mere 49 years, after a productive life, but one dogged by the
death of so many of his nearest and dearest at very young ages.
Here is some of his genealogy...

There seems to be a lot of duplication between
the Scottish Notes and Queries, The Scottish Antiquarian, the Scottish
Historical Review and Northern Notes and Queries. Also the first few
scans of this particular publication are not particularly good and some
pages have cut of some of the right hand side of the text. And so
we make these available as they do contain some good information but
whether unique or not we can't say.
