Biographies of Scots and Scots Descendants (Mc) McArthur
From Susan
Palmer
John & Mary (Campbell) left Islay in 1850 and settled in Collingwood
Township, Grey County, Ontario with their four children. They
purchased 100 acres of land for $575 (with a $200 mortgage) and began
growing hay. When they arrived, they cleared the land and built a
simple log house for the time being until their farm house was completed.
In later years, it was used to house the pigs. My sister and I have
fond memories of playing in the old log house when we were children.
My grandfather used to say (to anyone who would listen) that he never
understood why his grandparents had bought land with a slope on it, and
how difficult it was to cut the hay with a scythe on the slope.
