Mini Biographies of Scots and Scots Descendants (Mc)
MacKercher Family

I enjoy reading THE FAMILY TREE.  Perhaps you might be interested in the attached photos for publication.  One is of my son, Captain John  C. MacKercher, Jr., United States Navy and the current Commanding Officer of the Aegis class missile cruiser USS SAN JACINTO (CG-56).  The other photo is of the SAN JAC, the nickname by which her crew calls the Navy's most powerful surface ship.  USS SAN JACINTO is a part of the TRUMAN Battle Group which currently is operating in the Mediterranean Sea.

'Jay', who is a 1977 U. S. Naval Academy graduate, is the great-great-great grandson of Duncan McKercher and Elizabeth McKenzie.  After their wedding in 1783, the couple lived in Perthshire's Glen Lyon where Duncan was factor at the Meggernie Estate.  Elizabeth was of the McKenzie's of Appin, Argylshire.

Captain MacKercher visited Scotland when he took another ship he commanded, the guided missile frigate USS ESTOCHIN, into Edinburough in 1998.  At that time, he journeyed to Glen Lyon and at the invitation of its owner took a tour of Meggernie Castle's interior.  In so doing, he became the first MacKercher in 135 years to do so.  The photo of Captain MacKercher is taken aboard his ship with the nuclear attack aircraft carrier USS HARRY S. TRUMAN looming in the background.  For those interested please visit our Family Web site.

Sincerely
John C. MacKercher, U. S. Navy (Retired)
