Mini Biographies of Scots and Scots Descendants (M)
Andrew Mitchell

Andrew Mitchell was born at Clawfin in Ayrshire, Scotland in 1733.   He was one of 9 children of Robert Mitchell and his wife Marion Weir.    In 1753 Andrew emigrated to America where he first became a merchant in Philadelphia but later moved to Ballston Spa where he was comissioned a second major in the 12th Regiment, the New York Militia, fighting in the revolutionary war.   He was later appointed a Justice of the peace and a member of the New York Assembly from Saratoga.   Two of his sons left the area and travelled by train, boat and waggon, William to an area now known as Kendalville and George Cadillac in Indiana.   John Mitchell, William's son,  became a very worthy and philantropic gentleman, a banker and entrepreneur.   George did equally well in Cadillac and died a wealthy gentleman.   The full story of this Scottish family (still with descendants in Scotland) can be found in Alvord's History of Noble County, Indiana,   published by Bowen in 1902.
