In 1843, the daughter of the half-Scottish
poet Lord Byron, wrote a list of instructions for a hypothetical computer
theorized by the Englishman Charles Babbage, thus becoming the world’s
first computer programmer. In 1979, the U.S. Department of Defense named
its new standardized computer language ADA in her honor.
