Burpee, W.
Atlee |
Founded Burpee Seeds. His mother, Lois
Torrance, was born in Tiberias, Palestine, the daughter of a Presbyterian
minister from Glasgow. Burpee copied the modest success of
Scottish-American farmer John Rennie, who was the first to grow flower
seeds in California’s Lompoc Valley. Rennie, in turn, had planted his
seeds at the suggestion of John Smith, a Scot who visited him in 1907.
Today, the Lompoc Valley produces more than half the world’s flower
seeds.
W. Atlee Burpee-founder of Burpee Seeds, was
the son of Dr David Burpee and Blanche Simmons Burpee. Lois Torrance was
not his Mother!!-(See your mini-biography of W. Atlee Burpee). Lois
Torrance Burpee was the wife of David Burpee--one of 3 sons of W. Atlee
Burpee!!! David was the head of the business. Please correct! W. Atlee
Burpee was my Great Grandfather, W. Atlee Burpee, Jr. my Grandfather and
David Burpee, my Great Uncle! Murray Richards Richey.
