In the nineteenth century, he organized a
chain of Scottish dry-goods stores called the Syndicate Trading Company.
Each firm was owned, run, and staffed by Scots. The Syndicate also had
stores in Rochester, Reading, Salem, Minneapolis, and Kansas City.
