Fullarton


A locational name borne of a place called Fullerton near Ayr or Foulertoun near Forfar. Variants Fullerton, Fullarton, Foulerton, Fulton.This name is of Celtic origin and is popular throughout England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. It is found in many mediaeval manuscripts in the above islands. Examples of such are a Thomas de Fulton who witnessed a donation to the Monastry of Paisley, in the year 1260, and an Adam de Fowlerton, had a charter of lands of Foullartoun and Gaylis in Kyle Stewart from James the High Steward, in the year 1283. A branch of the family settled in Arran, and are said to have had, from Bruce, a charter of the lands of Kilmichael there in 1307. They held the office of coroner.  In Ireland we can trace the name back to the 16th century, they being a branch  of the Clan from the town of Fullarton in Scotland.
