Around the Great Glen and the West Highlands


A day excursion - Speyside and the Great Glen - 140 MILES (224KM)

Commando Memorial = photo by Lynne MotijoaneFrom any of the Speyside villages (preserved steam railway, ospreys, Highland estate visits, wildlife park, clan museum, folk museum and lots more) head south and west by Loch Laggan (mountainous views) to reach Spean Bridge (Commando Memorial) Optional extension to Fort William.

Turn north up the Great Glen to reach Fort Augustus (Caledonian Canal). Take either east or west bank of Loch Ness. East bank via Whitebridge, Inverfarigaig and Dores: fine views, forest centre, waterfalls. West bank main road: Urquhart Castle, Loch Ness Monster visitor centres at Drumnadrochit. Reach Inverness and circle back to Speyside via Carrbridge (Landmark Visitor Centre).

The West Highlands - Day excursions: Glencoe and Rannoch 120 MILES (192KM)

From Fort William (optional excursion to Mallaig) go south to Glencoe (visitor centre, folk museum). Turn east and south to Rannoch Moor, reach Tyndrum, turn west for Loch Awe, Kilchurn Castle, Cruachan Dam Visitor Centre before turning north (loch and hill views, Sea Life Centre at Barcaldine) then reaching Ballachulish and Fort William.
