The
Pacific Ocean at Point Lobos, San Francisco
I seem to have gotten
myself lost with amazing regularity while I was on this trip. On this
little trip to the beach I was given directions over the Oakland Bay
Bridge, up Market Street, turn at Ganey and then straight out to the
Beach. However, Ganey (or whatever it really is) turns out to become
oneway around the University of California at San Francisco. So, while I’m
trying to turn myself around and get back on the road to the Beach I
find myself driving around the university. It’s a beautiful early
Spring day in March, I have the windows down, the place looks like a
typical funky university area with what I think is a really nice aroma
of bay leaves. What a lovely place I think. It’s not until I’m
trying to figure out what street I’m really on and look up at the
street signs and see one seeing "Haight" and another saying
"Ashbury" that I wonder if I really am smelling bay leaves!
This drive was really interesting. It’s
very close to Golden Gate State Park, and there’s an historic
restaurant out her called the "Cliff House." I have a
postcard, from an old painting of the original Cliff House, which is
among the missing in action souvenirs as well, and when that turns up I’ll
add it to this collection. I was disappointed in the service at the
modern Cliff House restaurant. Everywhere else I ate in this area –
and they were usually nice expense account restaurants – I was given a
good table as a single diner. But this place wanted to stick me in a
corner and I told the maitre d’ that in my opinion he was
discriminating against me as a single diner and I therefore chose to
dine elsewhere. Sounds really good – but the closest thing was a
little hamburger stand up the street, and I ended up taking Boston
Market meat loaf back to the hotel.
