Perhaps the most famous textile in the world, tartan is so closely
involved in Scottish history and culture that it is considered an
essential part of the national identity.
This original and unique exhibition of tartans follows the fortunes of
the textile through an examination of its origins, its role in the
great 19th century romantic movement and its development in modern
times.
On the occasion of the exhibition, the Scottish Tartans Authority and
Museo del Tessuto have created a new tartan - MacPrato - based on the
colours of the coat of arms of the Municipality of Prato.
The final section of the the exhibition allows visitors to design
their own tartan using the Internet software provided by House of
Tartan.
