Fort George

Some 4 miles from "The Taste of Murray" on the A96 to Aberdeen from Inverness, you will find Fort George which is a pretty tremendous set of buildings and ramparts.  Here are a set of pictures I took while I walked around it...

Thomas was born in 1790. He passed away in 1855. While he was still a teenager the family name changed from Duff to Gordon in 1804, in connection with the will of his grandmother who died that year. This development is treated variously by the sources.

Thomas Gordon (born Thomas Duff) enlisted in the British Royal Navy in 1803. Two years later he was serving onboard HMS Mars alongside his elder brother at the Battle of Trafalgar which, unlike his brother, he survived.

He became a Lieutenant-Colonel when aged just 20. He came to be known in later life as Colonel Gordon of Park. This reflected his forty-five years of service as a colonel in the Inverness and Banffshire Militia. In 1855 he was in command of the militia regimemt when it was installed at "Fort George" (near Inverness) while frontline forces were contronting the Russian empire in Crimea. It was at "Fort George" that he died of small pox.

Sir Robert, became seventh baronet. He was lieutenant-governor of Fort George.

You can't actually take pictures in the museum but I really wanted to give you an idea of what can be seen in it as it really is an amazing place.  Should you be interested in military history then this is a must place to visit.

And that concluded my visit to Fort George and a great time I had there
