I, John Henderson, born
in Logie, Stirling, Scotland in 1939, am a Great Great Grandson of John
Maxwell Richardson (1818, Hightae-1884, Hightae), a 'kindly tenant' or 'portioner'
of Crown Land' in Hightae, Lochmaben from the time he inherited such a
tenancy on the death of his father, John Richardson (Heckler) of Hightae
who died there in 1848.
This 'tenancy gift' was conferred on c. 70 faithful servants of King
Robert the Bruce from Hightae, Smalholm, Heck and Greenhill after the
defeat of Edward II of England at Bannockburn on the 24th of June, 1314.
I share this honourable
ancestry with the many descendants worldwide of Janet (Richardson) Kerr
(1855, Hightae-1925, Stirling) (daughter of John Maxwell Richardson) of
whose ten children, by James Kerr (1855, Cramond-1932, Stirling) seven
married and produced offspring.
A history of the 'kindly
tenancy' awarded by King Robert the Bruce now follows....
Kindly Tenants |
