It is incredibly important to have clear
navigation on your site so your site visitor knows where to go to find
the information they want. It is even more important when you are
developing a large site.
Ensure you use clear wording for all your
links.. don't make your visitor have to guess where they should go to
find things.
Think carefully why visitors will come to
your site.. are they after product information, advice, pricing,
background information to a sector of the market, contact details for
your company, marketing information, etc.
Once you have decided all the reasons
that a visitor might have for coming to your site you need to also think
of who those visitors might be... a Managing Director, a Marketing
Director, an interested individual, an official buyer, a student, etc.
Now look at your site from each visitors
perspective.. if you were the Managing Director of a company why might
you be visiting my site? What might you be looking for?
Having answered that look at your site from their perspective... how
easy will it be for them to find what they are after?
Test this out with colleagues.. give them
a role to play.. like you are an official buyer for xyz company and you
want to visit my site to get xyz information. Now with that model
go to our site and see how you get on.
I can tell you right away that too many
web sites have poor navigation making it time consuming to find
information. Small sites obviously have much less of a problem but
if you intend to build a large site then this is a critical issue.
Finally.. please ensure that you have
very clear navigation to a contact page where visitors can find a name,
phone number, email address, etc for your company.
