PREFATORY NOTE
This Address was
delivered on 4th November 1909, on the occasion of my Inauguration as
President of the Associated Societies of the University of Edinburgh.
Since its delivery I have revised, amended, and somewhat expanded it.
But it is proper to remind the reader that it remains an Address and not
an essay, and that it should be read with that indulgence to roughness
and superficiality which is more readily accorded to spoken than to
written compositions.
