M. G. Judge
About Me

About M. G. Judge / Bill Rectangle

M. G. Judge writes under the pen name Bill Rectangle.

Originally from Edinburgh and now based in West Lothian, Scotland, he has worked professionally in IT and technology for more than thirty years.

His education and professional development have included computing and Computer Support/IT through NC, HNC and HND study, followed by professional technology qualifications and continued learning throughout his career.

He remains a full-time IT professional and is continuing further professional development, including approximately eighteen months of part-time cyber-security study and training.

His first independently authored and self-published memoir, STENHOUSE: Growing Up in Edinburgh and Beyond, preserves his memories of growing up in Stenhouse and wider Edinburgh during the 1980s and early 1990s.

He also personally narrated the complete audiobook.

STENHOUSE was developed entirely in his personal time, outside his Monday–Friday, 9–5 professional IT role, with professional responsibilities and personal and family commitments taking priority.

His lived experience remains the single source of truth behind the memoir.

The project deliberately used AI in an unusual direction: rather than asking technology to invent a synthetic story, AI was tested as a means of helping organise, research, explore and present an existing authentic human story while the author remained the authority over it.

His published position is that AI should be an enabling tool rather than a substitute for human responsibility, with the human remaining the controlling mind and retaining design authority.

He supports responsible AI policy covering accountability, privacy, security, accuracy, bias, transparency, ownership, intellectual-property protection, consent, attribution and meaningful human oversight.

The Bill Rectangle name originated roughly nineteen years ago as an automated avatar created for a family internet-radio project. The system could convert incoming listener emails into speech during automated broadcasts.

“Michael submitted the names Bill Rectangle and Mike Judge through NASA/JPL’s Mars Science Laboratory ‘Send Your Name to Mars’ programme on 21 June 2010. His original participation certificates record Bill Rectangle as N2M400803203 and Mike Judge as N2M400803204, and state that the names would be carried to Mars on a microchip aboard the rover.”

I have now located my original 2010 NASA participation certificates in an old Facebook archive. They confirm that the Bill Rectangle name was submitted through NASA/JPL’s Mars Science Laboratory “Send Your Name to Mars” programme, rather than the Dawn asteroid-belt programme referenced in my earlier article.

The original certificates show:

• Bill Rectangle — Certificate N2M400803203
• Mike Judge — Certificate N2M400803204
• Date: 21 June 2010

Both certificates state that the names would be carried to Mars on a microchip aboard NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory rover.

I have attached clean crops made directly from the original screenshots. These are non-generative crops of the original evidence — the surrounding Facebook/browser interface has simply been removed for clarity.

Years later, Bill Rectangle became his author pen name.

Away from writing and professional technology, his interests include football, music, skating, skateboarding, skiing, snowboarding, surfing and the cultural and technological history of the period he grew up in.

STENHOUSE has since developed into a wider ecosystem spanning print, ebook, audiobook, digital publishing, interviews, articles, audience engagement, historical-memory work, frontier-AI experimentation and early research into possible future adaptations.

Book One has therefore served both as a finished memoir in its own right and as an opportunity to understand the audiences, communities and themes with which the work connects most strongly.

The response from local friends and family, wider readers, authors, interviewers, publishers and others around the project has been exceptionally welcoming and encouraging.

Future possibilities include a continuation of the memoir, further writing around technology and cultural memory, and the early-stage research concept for an interactive STENHOUSE-inspired game currently carrying the working title My Bit / Ma Bit.

The title deliberately connects the Scottish idea of somebody’s “bit” — their home, place or area — with the computing meaning of a bit as a fundamental unit of digital information.

The game remains solely at the idea and research stage, including investigation into what modern AI-assisted tools could realistically enable.

These future ideas remain deliberately flexible rather than forming a rigid production schedule, allowing his professional IT career, ongoing cyber-security development and family commitments to continue taking priority.
