Little Leslie

Having a new baby is a tiring job. New babies don’t sleep very well and they cry a lot when they are hungry. Little Leslie cried all the time, even when she wasn’t hungry. Mama stayed up all night with her, rocking her, patting her and even changing her diaper ten times. No matter what she did, Little Leslie kept on crying. Papa didn’t get much sleep that night either.

The next day after Papa went to work, Little Leslie kept crying. Mama fed her a bottle, sat on the chair and patted her back and walked around bouncing her gently up and down, but still Little Leslie cried. Mama cried because she was tired and didn’t know what to do to stop the baby from crying.

When Papa came home from work he saw Mama crying and heard Little Leslie wailing. He put down his briefcase and took off his suit jacket and tie. He lifted Little Leslie from Mama’s arms and put her over his shoulder. He patted her back and sang a lullaby to her.

Little Leslie let out a huge burp. It was so loud that Mama jumped up in fright.

Papa laughed and kissed his baby girl. Ten minutes later Little Leslie fell asleep. She slept while Mama fixed supper. She slept while Mama and Papa read books and she slept all night long. She didn’t cry, or wail, or fuss.

From then on when Papa came home from work, he burped Little Leslie and she would go to sleep. Little Leslie was happy. Mama was happy and Papa was happy too.
