It has been a satisfaction
to many a little boy, I am sure, to feel that he was not, by many miles.
so simple as that most abject of all simpletons, familiar to him as:-
Simple Simon met a
pie-man,
Going to the fair;
Said Simple Simon to the pie-man,
"Let me taste your ware."
Says the pie-man, "Simple
Simon,
Show- me first your penny;"
Said Simple Simon to the pie-man,
"Indeed. I have not any."
Simple Simon went
a-fishing,
For to catch a whale
All the water he had got
Was in his mother's pail!
