William W. Moyes Biography

This biography is from "Memorial and biographical record; an illustrated compendium of biography, containing a compendium of local biography, including biographical sketches of prominent old settlers and representative citizens of South Dakota..." Published by G. A. Ogle & Co., Chicago, 1899. Pages 686-687

WILLIAM W. MOYES, editor and proprietor of the "Bridgewater Tribune," of the city of Bridgewater, South Dakota, is one of McCook county's most prominent men.

Mr. Moyes' parents, Henry A. and Euphemia (McKinley) Moyes, were natives of Scotland and emigrated to America about 1868. His father was a baker by trade and settled in Dubuque, Iowa, engaging in the grocery business in connection with his bakery. It was here that William W. Moyes was born November 26, 1872. He was one of thirteen children and the seventh child in the order of their births. In the spring of 1885 the family removed to Dakota and his father again followed his trade.

Mr. Moyes, when but fourteen years of age, essayed newspaper work and obtained a position on the "Alexandria Herald." He succeeded in his chosen vocation and in 1892 went to Bridgewater and established a paper under the name of the "Brieflet." It was Republican, and Bridgewater at that time boasted another Republican sheet, the "Times." The rival, at the end of one year, was purchased by Mr. Moyes and the name of his paper changed to the "Bridgewater Tribune." The enterprise and the get up of the paper and its editorials soon forced it into general notice and to-day it not only circulates throughout McCook county, but penetrates to all sections of the state and surrounding country.

Mr. Moyes is a Republican and through his paper stands staunchly for his party. Aside from his newspaper work, he gives his attention to several local offices. He was clerk of the city of Bridgewater, and is secretary of the South Dakota Detective Association. He is a member of the Ancient Order of United Workmen and the Modern Woodmen of America. McCook county may well number among her influential citizens the young man who has established the "Bridgewater Tribune," and who is taking such an active interest in the future of his county and state.
