A Highlander Goes To War is
Peter Grant’s memorable account of his war-time service mainly in India and
Burma.
Beginning with those first quizzical days of the war, when people did not
know what to expect, on to the first rumblings of the German war machine,
Grant recalls those times and his involvement in the foundation of the Home
Guard. After training with the Scots Guards, he was commissioned into the
Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders, with whom, some two years after Dunkirk, he
sailed for India with the 2nd Division, part of the Imperial Reserve.
Two years’ intensive training, to meet the Japanese threat, established
cordial relations with the Indians and the Indian Army and Grant affords the
reader with some interesting asides on ordinary life there. This all changed
with the Japanese invasion of India. The 2nd Division was sent to meet the
invaders and courageously delivered the first Japanese defeat, at Kohima.
The account of the war of pursuit that followed is a tribute to the bravery
of the ‘Forgotten Army’ and Grant succeeds in laying down a well-balanced
account of these harsh times.
A Highlander Goes To War is a well-tuned, emotive, humorous and unique
account of war. Peter Grant writes with sensitivity and flair, and has
created a book of considerable historical and personal value. Once a
Cameron, always a Cameron.
