SOLWAY, Earl of, a title
in the Scottish peerage, which, with the secondary titles of Viscount
Tibberis, and Baron Douglas of Lockerby, Dalveen, and Thornhill, was
conferred, by patent, dated 17th June 1706, on Lord Charles Douglas,
third son of the second duke of Queensberry, afterwards third duke of
Queensberry, and second duke of Dover. On his accession to the dukedom
in 1711, it became merged in that title. Extinct on his death in 1778. |
