BYRES,
a surname derived from a barony in the county of Haddington, which for
many centuries belonged to the noble family of Lindsay, ancestor to the
earls of Crawford, from whom it was acquired about the beginning of the
seventeenth century, by the earl of Haddington, who is baron of Binning
and Byres. The barony is now the property of the earl of Hopetoun. [See
