REV. Mr. Thom was appointed by the
Presbytery to assist at the induction of a young clergyman of whose
talents he had a very mean opinion. Returning late in the evening, he
met an aged member of his own session, near the entry to the manse, who
inquired for his minister, and
"Whaur he had been?"
Mr. Thom explained; and was
further asked:
"And did you ride your poor mare
a’ the way and back again ? You’ll fell the trusty beast!"
To which Mr. Thorn rejoined:
"An’ if it should, John, it’s only
felling ae brute by settling anither."
