Sixty years ago a group of people interested in Scottish Country Dances met in Glasgow The meeting, called by Mrs Ysobel Stewart of Fasnacloich and Miss Jean Milligan of Glasgow on 26th November 1923, marked the beginning of the movement which is now world-wide and known as "The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society". The International success of the Society was largely due to the inspired and enthusiastic leadership of Jean Milligan who, until her death in 1978 at the age of ninety-two, devoted most of her time and energy to the spreading of Scottish Country Dancing all over the world. Her invaluable contribution to the preservation and promotion of Scotland’s national heritage of music and dance was recognised in 1977 when the University of Aberdeen conferred upon her the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws.

She came from a family of teachers, trained as a teacher of physical education before the First World War and spent almost forty years on the staff of Jordanhill Training College, Glasgow. Thousands of student teachers passed through her hands and many of them, some now in old age, have recorded their deep appreciation of the fine example she set as a teacher of all aspects of physical movement as well as of Scottish Country Dancing.
