Pioneer and salmon canner.
Born 1809 in Riccarton, near Linlithgow, West Lothian, he emigrated to
Quebec and later settled in Oregon. In 1857, West opened a salmon cannery
at Westport (named after him) on the Columbia River near Astoria. He died
there in 1888, the same year that T.L.Pelling and C.H. Stanley of Liverpool,
England acquired the rights to the brand name "John West" for their
world-famous range of canned fish (notably salmon and tuna) and other
products.
