With the slight exceptions
formerly noticed, the originals of Sadleyr’s State Papers are now
printed for the first time in their integrity.2 In addition, there are
many letters of James V., his mother Queen Margaret, the Regent Arran,
Archibald earl of Angus, his brother Sir George Douglas, the Earls of
Cassillis, Glencairn, and others of note in Scotland. On the English
side are the drafts of despatches from Henry or his Council, often
bearing the King’s autograph corrections, with original letters from
Norfolk, Suffolk, Hertford, Dudley (Viscount Lisle), Parr, Shrewsbury,
and other leading statesmen.
The reader wifi find it advantageous in consulting these letters and
papers, to refer also to the printed collection of State Papers, edited
by Mr Lemon. The letters or despatches in one collection are often
replies to those in the other, and together they explain a good deal
hitherto left doubtful.
