This may indeed be two married couples, with similar names. Due to the
strict adherence to the Scottish Naming System, it happens frequently.
Highlands of Scotland:
At the same time James MacKay and his wife, Janet Sutherland, were bearing
children and raising their family at Rossal in Rogart (Sutherland, Scotland),
James MacKay and his wife, Janet MacKay, were bearing their children and raising
their family at nearby Muie, in Rogart. The two couples gave their children
similar names, due to the Scottish Naming system which may indicate a
relationship between them. But, related or not, they were two distinct families.
New Scotland (Nova Scotia):
In the Earltown area of Nova Scotia, there were two couples by name of John
MacKay and Janet MacKay bearing children, and raising their families in the same
time period. Such situations may be sent to try the patience of genealogists,
and prove that many things may not be as they appear to be.
