Mo Hawg - Week 8 |
Day 1.
Mo’s Trivia Question for
Today: For fans of Harry Potter: What does the Hogwarts motto mean? In
Latin it is “Draco dormiens nunquam titillandus.”
Author J.K. Rowling’s Hogwarts motto means, in English, “Never tickle a
sleeping dragon.”
That makes sense to Mo!
Mo’s Other Trivia Question for Today: Most of us have read the books
of Pearl S. Buck. Do you know what that “S.” stood for?
Give up? Mo knows.
Pearl Buck’s middle name was “Sydenstricker.” Truly. Pearl
Sydenstricker Buck was her full name.
Mo’s George Eliot Wisdom for Today: Animals are such agreeable friends
– they ask no questions, they pass no criticisms.
Day 2.
It seems we have a contest amongst our readers as to who can come up
with the worst shaggy-dog story ending in a pun.
Today, we have the entry from John R. from Sale City.
It seems that a very long time ago in Norway, Inga married an ugly man
named Sven and stayed with him for three years and then threw him in the
ocean.
Why did she do this? She had been promised in a dream that if she
would marry an ugly man named Sven and stay with him for three years and
then threw him into the ocean, a beautiful fur coat that would keep
Norwegian Inga warm through the difficult winters ahead.
When Inga threw Sven into the ocean, she waited for the beautiful fur
coat to appear…but only a very ugly, threadbare coat made from the sparse
fur of a muskrat and which was three sizes too small – appeared.
Inga cried to the heavens, “My dream lied to me!”
A voice boomed down at Inga. It said, “You’ve learned two important
lessons, Inga. One: Don’t marry for riches. And, two: You can lead a
Norse to water, but you can’t make him mink.”
Day 3.
Mo’s Trivia Question for Today: If you love Twinkies, you might know
this. What is the percentage of air by volume in a Hostess Twinkie?
Mo loves Twinkies and does know that 68% of each one is air!
Mo’s Other Trivia Question for Today: Do you know who Daniel Bakeman
was?
Mo knows.
Daniel Bakeman was the last veteran of the American Revolution. He
lived to be 109 and died April 5, 1869.
It’s true.
Mo’s Syrus Wisdom for Today: A friend must not be injured, even in
jest.
Mo’s Robert Louis Stevenson Wisdom for Today: A friend is somebody who
loves us with understanding as well as with emotion.
Day 4.
Mo’s Trivia Question for Today: What is the fewest number of people
necessary for a riot…according to our criminal law?
Mo knows. It only takes 3 people to legally stage a riot!
It’s true. Only three people!
Mo’s Charlotte Brontë Wisdom for Today: If we would build on a sure
foundation in friendship, we must love our friends for their sakes rather
than our own.
Mo’s Terrible Pun for Today: What’s green and sings?
(Be warned.) Elvis Parsley.
Mo’s True Wisdom: Friends are the family you make for yourself!
Mo’s Presidential Trivia for Today: Did you know that James Garfield
was our first United States President who was left-handed.
Day 5.
Mo’s Trivia Question for Today: Who was Mary Edwards Walker? She –
Mo’s hint – is a historical figure.
Give up?
Mary Edwards Walker is the only woman to receive the Medal of Honor.
She was one of the first female doctors in the United States and was a
surgeon for the Union Army during the War Between the States.
Mo’s William Hazlitt Wisdom for Today: Nothing gives such a blow to
friendship as detecting another in an untruth.
Mo’s Terrible Pun for Today: Seven days showed up at the emergency room
at Colquitt Regional Medical Center.
“What are you all doing here,” asked the doctor.
“We’re feeling week,” they replied.
