The County Schoolmaster had made it a practise
to encourage parents to consult him, at the close of each year, before
deciding on the careers of the children then leaving school.
Mrs MacFarlane duly presented herself with her
young Willie, but made it clear at once that she had her own decided views
on the subject.
"A hae juist come ti tell ye" she announced
" that Willie's ti be a butcher."
"A butcher!" exclaimed the disappointed
master. "A butcher! Why on earth do you want him to be a butcher?"
"Weill" she replied "his herts fair set on't.
He's that fond o animals!"
