The Sculptured Stones of
Scotland may be considered the earliest existing expressions of the
ideas, and the most genuine records of the skill in art, of the early
inhabitants of Scotland; but they have been so long neglected, that now,
when attention has been awakened to their interest, we find them
diminished in number, and, in many cases, mutilated in their form.
