MacCarthy comes
from the Irish Mac Carthaigh, derived from the name Carthach, an
eleventh century Prince of Desmond who died in 1045. The MacCarthy
Family motto is - Forti et Fideli nihil difficile - meaning 'To
the Brave and Faithful nothing is impossible.' Another motto is
sometimes used - Fortes ferox et celer - meaning 'Bravery is
fierce and swift.' The "Clan MacCarthy" includes MacCarthy,
McCarthy, McCarty, MacCartney, McCartney, Carthy, Carty, Cartey,
MacDonough, McDonough, MacAuliffe and McAuliffe.
