The history is my Sterling
family is from Scotland. We came to America and are all along the east
coast. Great grandfather was Joseph Sterling from Connecticut and Great
grandmother was Sarah Mack Sterling from Connecticut.
In our travels we ended up
in Tennessee and Kentucky. My Great grandfather John Sterling-Stirling was
born 1853 in Louisville, Kentucky and died in LaSalle, Illinois 1931
married my Great grandmother Berthina (Fanny) Morris Sterling 1875 in
Marion County, Kentucky. My Grandfather was Francis Ludwig Sterling born
1879 in New Hope, Kentucky and died 1923 in Tiskilwa, Bureau County,
Illinois. He owned and operated the family mill between Bureau and
Tiskilwa, Bureau County, Illinois. There is a road named after him, THE
OLD MILL ROAD.
Grandfather married my
Grandmother Mary Burrell Sterling 1908 in Illinois. My dad was Francis
Benjamin (Ben) Sterling born between Bureau and Tiskilwa, Bureau County,
Illinois 1916, dad ran and operated THE WASHBURN BODY SHOP and the
SINCLAIR GAS STATION until his death 1963 in Washburn, Illinois.
Dad married my mom Irene
Carroll Sterling 1939 in Muscatine, Iowa. Great grandfather John changed
our last name from Stirling to Sterling when he married Great grandmother
Fanny. John, Berthina, Lud, Mary, Dad and Mom are resting in Tiskilwa,
Bureau County, Illinois.
My Uncle Lawrence Robert
Sterling was the youngest and was only nine months old when Grandfather
Lud died and the only brother of my dads. Uncle Larry was born at the farm
and mill between Bureau and Tiskilwa, Bureau County, Illinois and is
resting at Forest Hill Cemetery, Bureau County, Illinois.
The family name has changed
many times from, Starling-Stirling and Sterling. This is my family
history as I know it. Sincerely,
Beverly Carroll Sterling Marine.
