George Struthers Preston (my
greatgrandfather) was born on the 24th of May 1886. George married a woman
called Jeanie they both emigrated to Toronto some time before 1915. In
Toronto they lived at 150 1/2 Queen Street. George worked as a House
Painter. On the 28th of July 1915 George joined the 58th battalion of the
Canadian Expeditionary Force. He was killed at Vimy in France on the 8th of
October 1916. His wife and baby daughter (my Grandmother) moved back to
Edinburgh (lawnmarket) shortly after this.
My grandmother Lily Callaghan
nee Preston lived her whole life (bar her first canadian year) in and around
Edinburgh her latter year in the cannongate. She always wondered about her
family that remained in Canada. Georges brother and nephew also emigated to
canada at about the same time as him. It look very likely that we will never
know what became of them.
