John Edward Plain |
By:
Robert Cameron Plain
My father John Edward Plain was born
in Shedden, Ontario on the 09th of January 1910 to parents John Richard
(Dick) Plain and Jenny Belle Plain (nee McVicar).. Jenny Belle was the
daughter of Malcolm McVicar and Elizabeth (Betsy) Campbell with direct
family ties to Argyll and Inverness. The family moved west to Maple Creek
Saskatchewan in the early 1900's but later moved to Linaria, Alberta as the
land was much better in that area. John was raised on the family farm with
his brother Mac, the twins Dave and Doug and his sister Betty.. he left the
farm to learn the grain buying business in Pibroch and Sexsmith Alberta and
was an elevator operator for many years.. he also did a lot of carpentry
work building homes for some of the local residents.. he was also known as
Ed or Jack to many of the local farmers.. he met and married Harriet Roberta
Fawcett in Sexsmith in 1933 ..they had four children Valerie, John Edward Jr.
,Robert and Beverly.. later John moved to Barrhead Alberta in 1944 as a
grain buyer and then bought his own farm two quarters (320 acres) on Highway
44 just south of Pibroch and about 5 miles north of Westlock, Alberta the
major town in the area.. he loved farming and we had several head of cattle
and hogs at all times ..he also liked Curling and was a lifetime member of
the Masonic Lodge.. several years later in 1957 due to health reasons he was
forced to sell the farm and move to Aldergrove, B.C. ..I still have many
fond memories of growing up on that farm.. In B.C. Dad also did carpentry
work until he started working for the Langley School Board and later became
Superintendent of Maintenance for the area. He loved fishing and family get
togethers and always had a big greenhouse and a massive garden.. he passed
away in 1978 and my mother in 1995..as Scots descendents they helped pioneer
and open up the West.. many roots and rocks were picked on those first
prairie homesteads when the trees were cleared away for grain farming.. I am
proud to be a member of a Canadian pioneer family whose roots reach back to
Argyll. |
