A Ormiston
In the United States are over 700 Ormistons, scattered all
over the country. Many also are listed at deviations of the name, such as
Ormister, Ormsby, Ormston, Ormiton Etc. The name has been traced as far
back as 400 A.D. where they settled in Kent. In 1066 King Harod
stripped them of their land titles and in disgust, many moved into what is
now Scotland. I was not able to research the history of the small town of
Ormiston in East Lothian, near the town of Pencaitland. It is a town
divided between old and new. When first arriving you are in the older part
where the building show signs of great age, but to the west are modern
homes, I saw no signs of the popular row houses, but was captivated by the
stone buildings that I felt had to be part of an ancient history. I
learned that there was only one Ormiston residing in the village, whether
I was being kidded or not I do not kow, but he was claimed to be the
mayor, and such a poor one, the retired miners at the miners club offered
to make me the mayor, then and there. Some day I shall return and spend a
day in the court house until I know all there is to know about the towns
