Tom Murray, Sr., a native
of Newton Mearns, Scotland and former Vice President of Operations for
Borden Chemical’s Monochem Plant, died November 29th, 2005. He was 82
years old. He served in the British Royal Air Force and later with the
Merchant Navy during the Korean War. Educated in mechanical engineering
at Stow Technical College in Glasgow, he worked for Rolls-Royce Motor
Company before immigrating to Canada. He then worked for Gonzales
Chemical in Puerto Rico and Borden Chemical in Brazil. He is survived
by his wife of 48 years, Claire Dubuc Murray; daughter Ruth Murray
Pechon and husband C.L. Pechon; son Thomas Murray and wife Debbie;
brother Danny Murray and wife Hilda of Newton Mearns, Scotland; and
three grandchildren: Paul & Ryan Heard and Tommy Murray. A Mason, Tom
was a founding member of the Caledonian Society of Baton Rouge,
inaugural Pipe Major of the Caledonian Pipes & Drums, a long-time member
of Clan Murray Society, and on the advisory panel for the Louisiana
Highland Games. Memorial services will be officiated by Michael Clark of
St. Francisville, Louisiana, a long-time family friend, with piping
honors performed by Dudley-Brian Smith of Smithfield Fair. Tom Murray
appeared in concert a number of times with the Scottish-American group
Smithfield Fair and appeared as a narrator on the group's "Burns Night
Out" and "The Winter Kirk" albums. Tom Murray was ever proud of being
Scottish and was last home in 2004.
