My grandmother Elizabeth Lettice married
George Murray Allan in Whiteinch, Partick, Glasgow at the age of 19 and
gave her parents names as James Lettice and Mary Lettice (m.s. McIntyre).
Together they eleven children. In 1906 George died.
Elizabeth Allan (widow lady, mother of
eleven) then proceeded to remarry my grandfather William Hawthorn in 1911.
She was then 42 years of age. She gave her parents names as Thomas
Lettice and Catherine Lettice (m.s. Kettles). There is a notation on
their marriage certificate "Warrant of Sheriff-Substitute of
Lanarkshire dated November 11, 1911.
After having eleven children, the lady had
a "shotgun wedding" with my grandfather because their
"first born" arrived a month later.
The "mystery" of this story is
that Elizabeth gave two different sets of parents and I have a huge wall
to locate anything about the first set of parents.
