William Keith (1838-1911) was the leading
artist in San Francisco and perhaps California's most highly regarded
painter at the end of the nineteenth century. A longtime friend of fellow
Scot and California naturalist John Muir, Keith arrived in the state in
1869 to pursue a career as an engraver. Born Old Meldrum, Aberdeenshire.
