I live in a region of New
York State called the Finger Lakes which is not unlike Scotland as it has
rounded hills and 11 long, finger-shaped lakes. I was looking in a book
called The Finger Lakes by John Francis McCarthy (Skyline Press, Toronto,
1984) and found the following.
"In 1835 Scottish immigrant John Johnston
introduced a method of draining agricultural lands by burying ceramic
tile. Johnston was also a pioneer in such practices as the use of lime and
plaster, the surface application of manure, the purchase of oil feed for
cattle and sheep, and the early cultivation of hay."
