James Innes came
to Cape Fear from Scotland. His plantation, Point Pleasant, was about
seven miles north of Wilmington on the North East River. He was Captain of
the Cape Fear Company that went to Cartagena, Colonel of Militia of New
Hanover County, and Colonel of the North Carolina Regiment raised during
the French and Indian War to assist in the defense of Virginia in 1754. He
was a member of St. James Church and served on the North Carolina Council
in 1750. He died September 5, 1758, and was supposedly buried at Point
Pleasant. His widow Jean married Francis Corbin in 1761 and died in 1775.
Her burial is described in the Journal of a Lady of Quality. The
house at Point Pleasant burned sometime before 1783. Learn
