Old Alick Grant Passes Away
An appreciation by Magistrate Philip
Good old Alick Grant, who
has been a notable citizen of North Vancouver for 19 years passed over the
great divide on Christmas evening, and is survived by his widow and three
sons, Alick, James and John and their families, all residing here. His
illness took the form of bronchitis and pneumonia and was comparatively
brief. He was buried this morning from St. Edmunds at a 9 AM funeral to
the North Vancouver Cemetery.
Mr. Grant was born in Glenlivet, Banffshire, Scotland on 28 Dec 1851 and
in 1884 he was married to Margaret Stuart of the same glen, and they have
had a long and very happy married life. His occupation in the old land was
for a time that of a forrester on a large estate, and for a time as a
farmer. He had considerable experience among sheep, and loved to speak of
his journeys from place to place in the Highlands of Scotland with flocks
of sheep. He dearly loved the old homeland, and it must have been
difficult for him to sever all the old ties and come out to a new and
unknown region.
Having once taken the step
he came direct to North Vancouver and here on this sunny slope he has had
his home since. He, early, got a position under the Parks Board, and for a
time he had charge of the cemetery. But several years ago when Mahon Park
was opened up and enlarged he was given charge of the Park. In that
position he operated very loyally until his death. Being an ardent lover
of young folks and deeply interested in all the sports that were held in
the Park, he made an excellent caretaker. It is in this connection that he
will be best remembered among us --- and that particularly by the boys and
girls, and we may quote the Master, saying "...inasmuch as you did it unto
one of the least of these, ye have done it unto Me". And we can rely that
the Master will keep His tryst with those who serve and trust Him.
(Mr Grant had been
caretaker of Mahon Park and in this capacity had made for himself a large
circle of friends among both the young and older exponents of all branches
of athletics in this city and he was a familiar figure at all athletic
competitions).

Great-grandfather...
