Helen
Born in Perthshire in the middle
of the eighteenth century, she was the daughter of a blacksmith. When she
turned eighteen she booked passage for America, but at sea her ship was
attacked by pirates who killed all the men and took all the women to the
slave market in Algiers. There she was purchased for the emperor of
Morocco, who became so infatuated with her beauty that he made her his
principal wife, and later empress.
