Christison, Philip (Sir)


The Japanese advance which had overrun Singapore and most of Burma was stopped decisively by this general, a Gaelic enthusiast who beat the enemy at Rangoon, a turning point in the Eastern theater. Sir Philip, the highest-ranking British officer in Southeast Asia, took the surrender of all Japanese forces in that area on September 3, 1945. He lived to be 100 and died at his home in Melrose in 1993.
