Carter,
Orrin N. |
1854- Justice of the State Supreme Court. Born
Jefferson Co. NY; son of Benajah Carter who sailed on the great lakes and
died when Orrin was less than 2 years old and Isabel Cole. He worked his
way through Wheaton College and graduated with the A.B. degree in 1877. He
studied law in Chicago with Judge M.F. Tuley and General I. N. Stiles as
his preceptors. He taught from 1880-2. Married in Morris, IL 1881 Nettie
J. Steven. children: Allan J., Ruth G. He was admitted to the bar in 1880
and practiced at Morris for about 8 years. He served as states attorney
for Grundy county from 1883-88 conducting some important criminal trials,
notably the prosecution of Henry Schwartz and Newton Watt for the murder
of Kellogg Nichols, an express messenger while on duty in his car on the
Rock Island Railroad. Both men were convicted and sentenced to life. From
1892-1894 he was general attorney for the sanitary district in Chicago. In
1894, he was elected county judge of Cook County and has been twice
reelected. He resides with his family in Evanston. Mem Union League Club,
