All variants of this name
derive from the Gaelic Macphaidein, 'little Pat', and it is first recorded in Kintyre in
1304. There is a tradition that the clan was the first owner of Lochbuie, and subsequently
became itinerant goldsmiths. The name was common in Islay, Mull, and Tiree.
