A family best
known through James Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell, who had a scandalous affair and
marriage to Mary Queen of Scots. The principal house was Hepburn of Hailes but there were
other cadets, importantly that of Waughton, and Beanston, all in East Lothian. These
families provided soldiers, diplomats and clergy, and played important roles in Scottish
history for hundreds of years.
