E. Cloe, D. Ed., USAF (Ret.)
Alan Cloe informed me that Dr. Cloe passed away in his sleep on the weekend
of Saturday, September 24, 2016.
Lee E. Cloe, a Noblesville native, Charter Member of the Scottish Society
Indianapolis and a lifelong member of the Lions Club, was a retired US Air
Force pilot, training officer and commander, who flew supply and medical
evacuation planes in Vietnam, served in Saudi Arabia during the first
Persian Gulf War, and who retired with the rank of Major.
In addition to his military service, Lee Cloe held a doctorate in education,
he served as an administrator for various universities and state agencies,
and he was a frequently requested speaker on a number of historical subjects
and personalities, which he often presented in first person, in costumes
ranging from a Roman legionnaire to an Arab sheikh.
Dr. Cloe directed the first Society election at the First Annual Founders
Day Dinner on Wednesday, November 13, 1985, and went on to serve as Trustee
(1989-90), Secretary (1992-98 and 2000-02), Vice President (1991-92), and
President (1993), he was the third recipient of the Thomas H. (Tommy)
Thompson Award (1991), and named Secretary Emeritus.
According to Dr. Cloe, “There is no known connection of the CLOW/CLOE names
in Perthshire with any clans that I have been able to find, thus, we wear
the Strathearn tartan, to show the connection with the land of Scotland,”
and Dr. Cloe was an enthusiastic proponent for the wearing of District
Tartans.
His body has been given the IU Medical school but his widow may arrange a
celebration of life service in the future.

It would be interesting to compare information on your father's side of the
family as my father was Ernest Edward CLOE. He was born 2 August 1873 in
Clay Township, Hamilton County, Indiana and died 26 March 1945 in
Noblesville, Hamilton County, Indiana. His father, Abraham W. (Henry) CLOW
was born 23 April 1850 in Marion County, Indiana and died 11 April 1921 in
Noblesville, Hamilton County, Indiana. Grandfather was from a large family
and was orphaned when his mother died in 1863 (his father - William J. CLOW
- died 25 December 1854).
Of the seven children of William James CLOW and Elisabeth Rebecca RINGER, I
have only been able to track two of the boys. Louisa, Susan U., Rebecca E.,
Sarah J. and William J. (born just after his father's death) have all but
vanished.
In answer to your question of the Cloe's of Illinois being related to the
Cloe's of Virginia. The answer is possibly. James CLOW and Elizabeth
BIRDWELL had seven sons and four daughters. After the death of James in
Virginia, Elizabeth moved the family to Kentucky. From there they scattered
to Indiana and Illinois. One of the seven sons was William Howard CLOW who
was married five times and resided in Indiana, Illinois (I believe) and in
Benton, Arkansas. At the same time, I have information on a different line
(three brothers) that also came from Scotland but fifty some years later and
settled in the New England States until after the war of 1812 when one
brother moved to Kentucky, then to Indiana, then to Illinois and finally
back to Indiana. Then you have the Scottish CLOW's that went to Canada and
then into the U.S.
The database I have on the CLOE/CLOW has several disconnected lines but as I
have found out in the past, new information on one individual suddenly
connect two previously non-related CLOE/CLOW lines.
Any information you wish to share would be entered in the CLOE/CLOE database
and I will share with you what I have compiled from other individuals.

According to District Tartans by Gordon Teall of Teallach and Phillip D.
Smith Jr., the Strathearn Tartan is considered a district tartan which is
linked by name with land. In this case, the Strathearn tartan is linked to
the beautiful and rich valley of the River Earn. This tartan is said to have
been worn by the father of Queen Victoria, H.R.H. Edward, Duke of Kent who
was also Earl of Strathearn. Thus it is considered a 'royal' tartan which is
now used for the people of the loosely defined area without precise borders.
The designer of the tartan is unknown and the date of the tartan is pre
1820.
There is no known connection of the CLOW/CLOE names in Perthshire with any
clans that I have been able to find. Thus we wear the Strathearn tartan to
show the connection with the land of Scotland. In the original listing of
the names in Scotland and their associated tartans, (which I saw in Scottish
Tartans Museum, which used to be located in the former weaving village of
Comrie in Tayside / Perthshire, several years ago), the name CLOE/CLOW was
linked to the Strathearn District Tartan. That listing is now published
under the title Tartan for Me.
The CLOW Coat of Arms was issued to a merchant in Creiff, Scotland for his
own property. Since I have not seen any lineal descent from this particular
CLOW, I do not know if there would even be a connection to we as
individuals. But with all of the generations between him and us today, there
would have to be so many changes to the original Arms that it would be so
'busy', it would drive an engraver/painter nuts.

There is one additional son, still living. He is the only child from the
second marriage of Judge CLOE to Bessie June WODDELL. All three females from
the Hiram Riley WODDELL and Zarilda-Ann May STEPHENSON marriage had or used
an 'ie' at the end of their given names -- Katie Rachel, Bessie June and
Augusta Irene. Augusta used "Gussie" from an early age, Katie went by "Rachie"
and after the parents died, I never heard anyone call mother anything except
"Bess." I debated long and hard about putting "Bessie June" on her
gravestone (to be accurate). However, I do not want to be struck down by a
lightning bolt since she used "Bess J." Thus you see Bess W. CLOE on the
gravestone.
Please be advised that my paternal grandfather was born Abraham William CLOW/CLOE
on 23 April 1850 in Center Township, Marion County, Indiana. His father,
William James CLOE/CLOW died 25 Dec 1853. Abraham William is listed by that
name in both the 1850 Marion County Census and the 1860 Hamilton County
Census. Sometime after the death of William James in 1853, his widow,
Elizabeth RINGER, with five of the seven children, moved to Noblesville and
acquired the property next to the alley on the south side of Conner Street
between 9th and 10th --the old A&P Store and now Huntington Bank. She died
in 1862 and then came a lengthy court case with the husband of one the three
remaining daughters trying to obtain the property. During this time, Abraham
William disappeared and became a farm hand in Clay Township going by the
name of 'Henry'. I have Hamilton County documents typed to Henry A.M. CLOW
and Henry A. M. CLOE in the 1900's. How Abraham W. became A.M. is beyond me.
Since neither William James CLOE/CLOW, nor Elizabeth RINGER, could read nor
write, the census official put down what they heard. Thus in 1840 he was
listed as CLOE while in 1850, he was listed as CLOW. The 1860 listing also
shows CLOW. It should be noted that the Scottish progenitor that came to the
colonies was born CLOW genealogists state that all records in Maryland and
Virginia list it as CLOE.
